These guidelines will help scholars with the publication and dissemination of their work:

The scholarly publishing process

Select a journal to publish in

• Check Ulrichs’web to find journals by topics/type.
• Check the Open Access Journals: Directory of Open Access Journals, the Public Library of Science (PloS), BioMed Central and others.
• Check the Beall’s list of predatory publishers to avoid publishing in fake journals.
• Check the criteria for identifying Predatory Open Access Publishers.
• Check the Journal Citation Reports, the Web of Science and Scopus to evaluate and compare journals using citation data.
• Check the journal acceptance rate: (a description of Cabell’s Directory can be found in this video.
• Check the prestige of a journal by checking its Impact factor, Immediacy Factor and Eigenfactor.

Find research funder policies

• Check the Sherpa/Juliet database to learn about research funders’ open access policies.
• Check the research funder policies and related legislation information prepared by MIT.
• Check the UK research funders’ data policies.  
• Check the Foundation Center.

Cite your sources

• Create bibliographies by using citation managers like RefWorks, Mendeley and ENDNOTE.
• Check the APA, MLA, Chicago and IEEE citation styles.
• Choose a reference management tool.

Use Author ID system

• Use the ORCID (Open Researcher & Contributor ID) to get a unique research ID.

Know your rights: Increase the impact of our research by negotiating with publishers to retain certain rights

• Remove the barriers to sharing your work by posting it on your personal website or/and LAU Repository (LAUR) or/and a discipline repository (like PubMed central, ArXiv, etc.).
• Remove the barriers to reusing your work in teaching, in future publications and other professional activities.
• Check the Sherpa/Romeo database to check publishers’ policies regarding copyright policies and self-archiving.
• Check the Copyright Crash course.
• Attach an addendum to the publisher’s agreement defining in it which rights  you wish to retain.
• Attach a Creative Commons License to your Open Access Publications.

Share your work by depositing it in LAUR

• You may deposit your pre-print or author’s draft.  If you also wish to deposit the final published version, check here for publishers allowing use of their PDFs in repositories.

Track usage of your publications

• Check the Web of science.
• Check Altmetric.com to track social media sites.
• Check Google Scholar
